Applications

Below are just a few ideas we have thought of how we can reduce Founders House's impact on the environment.

Global Warming and Energy.

A boarding house in a school as big as bishops can have a massive effect on the schools Carbon Emissions and its overall effect on the environment. For example in Founders House alone there are +/- 70 residents who all have laundry that needs to be done. All of this laundry is taken to and from the laundry mats by trucks that carry the neat plastic covered parcels of linen. This process is repeated daily and emphasizes the fact the all services that are provided to Bishops (Food, Laundry, General Service) involve the use of cars which give off large amounts of carbon emissions. One way in which we could resolve this would be for boys to provide their own laundry bags so that plastic bags don’t have to be used for packaging the clothes. We could also stop externally sourcing out food and instead making it independently in the boarding house kitchens. This would not only potentially save us money but it would also drastically reduce our impact on the environment.
Another way in which Founders House could have an effect on the environment is how much electricity they use. Every boy has electronic needs for charging phones, laptops and other things such as dorm lights and geysers. One of the many ways in which we could reduce the amount of electricity Founders house would use would be to put timers on the geysers in the house so that they are turned off when the boys are in class. They could also put sensors on the lights in the dorms so that the lights turn off automatically when the room is empty. They could also put timers on the boys’ plugs in their rooms so that extra refrigerators and other appliances do not use unnecessary electricity when not in use. This could be particularly effective as these timers are very cheap but could save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on wasted electricity.
A boarding house like Founders also covers a very large amount of land and so all the roofs on the house could have solar panels put on them to try and lessen the demand for electricity used by the geysers when the boys shower during the peak hours of 6 – 7:30 AM and 6 – 10 PM.
